If you have a used car you want to sell for cash, there are some pro tips you can follow to optimize your chances of success. Before you can sell your car, you should first make sure there are no liens against it.

When you bought your car, you probably had it financed and made regular monthly payments. Usually, when you pay off the loan, the lender will send you a letter saying the balance has been paid in full and the lien against the car has been removed. Sometimes mistakes happen and the lien was not removed.

You should get a copy of your registration and if there are any liens, you can get those dealt with otherwise you will not be able to sell the car.

Advertising on classified websites

A commonplace to advertise cars for sale is Kijiji and to a lesser extend Craigslist. There is a huge array of different platforms that you could post on, you should not limit yourself and try as many as possible.

You will need to spend a little time writing up the description of the car and also you need to include some pictures and a video if possible. By providing a large amount of detail and photos, it shows prospective buyers you are serious and should hopefully weed out the people who just want to waste your time.

Social media

This is something we discourage, social media is fantastic when trying to build a brand but since you are just selling one car, you are going to experience more tire kickers and insincere buyers than on any other platform.  The buyers are going to ask you a variety of questions and then offer you something low like $500 when the car is worth $10,000 just to see how you respond. It may seem like we are exaggerating but this is one of the realities of selling on social media.

Social media also has a large number of scammers who ply their trade on unsuspecting individuals like you. They are very sophisticated so following the adage that prevention is better than cure, you should consider steering clear of social media when trying to sell your used car.

A surefire way to sell your car fast

This is not some trick but a quick and seamless way to sell your car for quick money. Go to your local car dealership and ask them for an appraisal on the car and find out what they would be willing to pay in cash for your car.

You are under no obligation to accept the offer made by the dealership but you can compare that to what you were asking for the car, if the number being offered by the dealership seems acceptable you should take it.

The dealership cannot give you 100% of the fair market value of the car, they would not be able to sell it for a profit.

This is why you must temper your expectation when selling to a local dealership but at least you have peace of mind knowing you are going to get a fair price and be paid quickly.
