Selling your car to a dealership is fast, painless and safe. Like anything, a little planning and research goes a long way, which is why we wrote this post.

Preparation is everything

 

Preparation really is everything. That means preparing your car and preparing the paperwork ready for the sale.

 

Preparing your car will probably take the longest, or not if it’s already in fantastic condition.

 

Prepare your car for sale

 

Preparing your car for sale is like dressing your house for sale. You want to make it look as good as it can and paint the picture of a lifestyle.

 

The better a car looks, the easier someone will find it to imagine themselves driving it. That’s the key here.

 

If you’re selling to a dealership, the appraiser will have that in mind when valuing the car. If you’re selling privately, the buyer will obviously be imagining themselves driving it.

 

The easier you can make that, the easier you’ll find it selling your car.

 

That means making the car look as good as it can. Making any bodywork repairs, polishing and waxing the exterior, making sure the wheels aren’t too chipped or damaged, ensuring tires and exterior trim is in good condition and making sure the entire interior looks good.

 

Getting your paperwork together

 

The other thing you’ll need to do is get your paperwork together. That’s the title, service record and any receipts for repairs. The title is the important thing. Without that you cannot sell the car.

 

Service paperwork helps make the car more desirable as it shows the car has been well looked after. It won’t necessarily make the car worth more, but it can increase the chances of being able to sell it.

 

Prepare your finances

 

Preparing your finances is an optional step. If you’re not buying another car for a while, you don’t need to do much here. If you are planning to buy another car, you’ll need to prepare for an auto loan.

 

If your car still has outstanding finance, you’ll need to make sure that will be settled.

 

If you’re selling privately, you’ll need to settle the auto loan before you sell the car so you have the title to sell. If you don’t, the potential buyer would have to pay you and then wait until you settle the loan before they take legal ownership.
